An
Interview with Rebecca Turbow
by Anissa Mook
In
just a few short years, fashion designer Rebecca Turbow's
Safe Clothes has grown from a playful concept to a much
buzzed-about, forward-thinking line of mod-inspired clothing
and accessories. I had the chance to interview the 25-year-old
Rebecca about her growing fashion line and the ups and
downs of running your own business.
How
did you get your start?
My mom taught me to sew growing up. In high school
I started altering and making my own clothes. I went to
art school and majored in fashion and textile design at
the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.
When
and why did you create your business?
I really created my business because I had a
hard time working for other people. It was always a struggle
for me. As soon as I left school I put my website up and
started getting orders. I knew I wanted to work for myself,
but at the time it was a way to make money.
Where
do you get your inspiration from?
I have always gotten a lot inspiration from other
artists, everything around me really, I get inspired by
lots of things. Nature of course, colors, people, my own
experiences. I love things to do with protective clothing
and safety, I am obsessed with the way women dressed in
the 50’s and 60’s, the whole perfect house
wife thing.
Who
is your favorite indie designer?
She’s not necessarily my favorite indie
designer, but I think Built by Wendy is a really good
model for young designers. Alison Kelly, Laura Dawson,
Supayana, they’re very talented ladies and some
of my best friends.
You’ve
been very successful at selling your designs online, what
advice would you give to other designers trying to sell
online?
If you’re just starting out, I think selling
things that are very versatile size wise is a really good
idea, less likely to get returns, like things that fit
a size small or medium. Having new things for sale as
often as possible keeps people interested and always coming
back to see what you’re doing.
Where
do you hope you/your business will be in 5 years?
I really want it to expand a lot, I have so so
many things I want to do. I hope I find a business partner
and can afford more help. I would love to have a store
by that time, maybe two or three.

Amy Winehouse Fires Up Imprisoned Hubby
Ever since Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil
tied the knot, there's been constant drama surrounding
their marriage. And the latest is that Blake is
furious that Amy spent Saturday night partying with
another man.
Reportedly
the "Rehab" singer elected to party the
night away with music producer Mark Ronson, who
she has worked with in the past. The story goes,
they met up Saturday evening and by the time 5:30am
Sunday morning rolled around, they checked into
a hotel.

How
to Make a New Year’s Resolution That
You’ll Actually Follow Through With
So it¹s New Year¹s Eve. The fireworks
have rained and exploded across the sky, the
dessert is all eaten and the champagne bottles
are empty. You sit around talking and New
Years resolutions come up. ³Yeah, this
year is gonna be different!². You feel
enthusiastic.
Fast-forward to the middle of January. The
weather¹s dreary. Enthusiasm has waned,
dabbling has ensued. Maybe the resolution
is abandoned altogether. How do actually stick
with your New Year¹s resolution?
Choose
something YOU really want.
It
has to be something you, yourself really want.
Or you will find it hard to keep the motivation
up. It will be hard to keep going after a
few days/weeks. You got 14 days until the
New Year is here. Start thinking about what
you really want.
And
find out what¹s in it for you. If you
don¹t even have a clear picture of why
you want to do something then there will be
motivational problems. Write down all the
reasons why getting your behind in gear and
getting a handle on your New Year¹s resolution
will help you. Remind yourself by reviewing
these reasons regularly and by putting them
up in visible locations in your daily life.

It's
The Swap That Counts
Granny wised up this year and got you a gift card
instead of socks. The only problem is she got the
gift certificate at some wretched shop that doesn't
fit your taste. One used to suffer through a gift
like this and either hold on to it forever or throw
it away. Not anymore. Swapagift.com lets you buy,
sell, swap or exchange gift cards and use gift cards
to pay bills or mail them in for cash. So turn in
that card for something fun from shops you actually
like, or just trade it for cash. Nothing says love
like some greenbacks.
